Formula One’s new American owners were keen to make a big impression at their home event. A mechanical bull in the paddock was one of the smaller enhancements made to the spectacle at the Circuit of the Americas.
Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton
The pre-race drivers introduction, featuring star announcer Michael Buffer, was over-the-top and somewhat over-long. But putting front row occupants and world championship rivals Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton together was a smart touch.
Multiple Olympic champion Usain Bolt added to the pre-race razzmatazz.
The grand prix didn’t disappoint once it got going. Vettel pulled off a surprise by beating Hamilton to turn one, though he couldn’t contain his rival.
Valtteri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo
Daniel Ricciardo used his trademark ultra-late braking as he tried to pass Valtteri Bottas.
When that didn’t work he made an early pit stop in a bid to undercut the Mercedes driver, but was sidelined by a power unit failure before he had a chance to get stuck in.
On his return to America Fernando Alonso used his helmet design from the Indianapolis 500. Unfortunately his race ended the same way, with a Honda engine failure.
They may as well rename it the Circuit of the Hamericas: Hamilton’s now won five of the six grands prix held at the Texan track.
Mercedes celebrated their fourth consecutive constructors’ championship victory.
