Nico Rosberg’s trip across the chicane while trying to pass Felipe Massa ended up costing him very dearly.

It cost him a place to Sergio Perez and delayed his attempts at passing they tyre-hobbled Ferrari.

The time lost meant that when Sebastian Vettel made his last pit stop the Red Bull driver was able to come out ahead of the Mercedes. And it also cost him a chance of getting ahead of Fernando Alonso – Rosberg crossed the finishing line 0.4s behind.

It goes to show how even the smallest mistake can have major consequences when the field is as tightly bunched as this. Perez went on to finish on the podium and Rosberg can reflect that, had it not been for that mistake at the chicane, he could have been there instead of sixth.

The race chart reveals how Grosjean might have had a chance of winning had he not fallen behind Paul di Resta at the start.

Grosjean lost around ten seconds in the opening 12 laps of the race in a queue of traffic behind the Force India. He ended the race 2.5s behind winner Hamilton.

In the hotter temperatures on race day the Lotus drivers enjoyed competitive race pace similar to what we saw in Bahrain and Spain. Grosjean ran a 50-lap second stint on Pirelli’s soft tyres, allowing him to pass Alonso for second place.

Grosjean’s position in the closing laps had a bearing on the leaders’ strategies. Christian Horner revealed they were reluctant to pit Vettel to cover Hamilton’s second stop because they knew Vettel, unlike Hamilton, would drop behind Grosjean. It goes to show how even the smallest mistake can have major consequences when the field is as tightly bunched as this.

– actually to me that really is a great thing this year. A small mistake can means loads of places and points lost.

It also means that we should be talking less about drivers being “humiliated”, “crushed” etc. by their team mates. Because from Hero to Zero really is only a small step today. A small moment for Rosberg here, and Massa’s spin is much the same, he could have been right on Alonso’s back at the finish without it. Sport on the top level, with a very even field. F1 2012, yes please!

  @matt90 – Basd on some comments by Ted Kravitz, and given the way de la Rosa and Karthikeyan retired within two laps of one another with the same problem, it’s given rise to the theory that HRT were light on fuel because they knew the brakes wouldn’t last a full race distance, so they want out for a spot of glory early on.

    I don’t know, if that was the case then how Pedro out-qualified the Marussias by half a second?
    I think they did have pace (Pedro at least) but they definitely knew they were marginal on brakes since Friday.

Is Ricciardo paying homage to his countryman Webber? His starts are continually dropping him back behind his team mate, even if he starts a few places ahead of him. I still have faith in him to deliver strong performances not just on Saturday but also on Sunday, but as Webber can attest to, making a poor start can make your race really difficult.

seems to me that if Vettel had pitted lap 58-61 he would have come out ahead of Perez, and then if everything else went as it did he would have overtaken Alonso for 3rd and perhaps had more time to have a go at Grosjean in 2nd on much fresher tyres…

Interesting how the slow-burn, almost “invisible” strategies like those of grosjean and perez are starting to draw parallels with oval racing, when it is often preferable to not sit at the front of the field. How much depends on the random performance variations of the tyres/car/race plan/track temps is debatable but it is interesting how important this style of race strategy is turning out to be, in 2012 anyway.

Those on a one stop strategy apart from Alonso and Vettel, were not aiming for a win but trying to score points. Grosjean and Perez were not plotting to win by pacing themselves, rather they were hoping for 4th or 5th – 8th respectively.
Had Grosjean being further forward at the start, he may have been forced to run at a faster pace and ended up with worn out tyres.
